Somerset County League Division 2 West; Churchill Club 70 1, Berrow 1.
|
Berrow squandered a golden opportunity to steal the march on their rivals Saturday as a rejuvenated Churchill side somehow stole a point from them on Saturday.
Berrow travelled to Churchill knowing that they had made no fewer than 14 signings that week, so were expecting a stern test from the hosts.
Berrow once again were unable to name the same starting line up as they were without James Reddish and Simon Dawes from the previous week. Berrow have now failed to name the same starting line up for any of their opening 6 fixtures, a fact that can only hamper their promotion charge.
In the opening exchanges the visitors were superb playing some great football on a small, narrow pitch and it was no surprise when they took the lead, Skipper Ryan McErlain firing home into the top corner after a goal mouth melee.
Berrow kicked on, and only some desperate defending and woeful finishing prevented them from extending their lead before half time.
It could have been worse had it not been for a great stop from the largely redundant Chris Warner just before half time as the Churchill striker broke free from his shackles and bore down on goal.
Second half saw Berrow run out of steam for the opening exchanges, however the backline dealt well with their opposition, however they were handed an equalizer from a long throw routine.
This sparked Berrow back into life as they introduced Ellis Harper and Dax Vincent, both were impressive and injected new impetus into the Berrow attack.
However once again they were let down by their finishing as the game ended all square.
Man of the match was yet again Jeff Read for another energetic display, he was pushed hard by Warner who also gave his best performance of the season as he looks to return to top form.
Warner, Shepherd, Prowse, Vickery, Lismore, W.Conway (Harper), L.McErlain, R.McErlain, Read, Dean, Keirle (Vincent) Unused; C.Conway
