Somerset County League Division 2 West; Berrow 4, Combe St Nicholas 0.
Berrow finally recorded victory against bogey side Combe St. Nicholas at the SEVENTH time of asking at Red road on Saturday with an impressive display.

Berrow were once again forced into changes as they were without Skipper Ryan McErlain, Lloyd Dean, Will Conway and Chaz Conway. Simon Dawes and James Reddish returned to the starting line up with Steve Eley taking a place on the bench after recovering from injury. Dax Vincent was also handed a start after an impressive appearance as substitute the week before.

Starting the game with the strong, howling wind in their faces the hosts spent the opening exchanges struggling to get the ball out of their own half as Combe looked to press home an early advantage. However Berrows back line of Vickery, Dawes, Prowse and Lismore were bang on their game with Chris Warner orchestrating things from goal and Jack Shepherd providing the added protection in midfield.

Largely against the run of play Berrow snatched the lead, when Luke McErlain’s through ball was helped on by Jeff Read, Vincent marked his first start with a goal, adding a cool finish from inside the box.

Combe continued to knock at the door reigning long ball after long ball down on the Berrow backline but they held firm and with a quick break, doubled their advantage when Reddish crossed from the left hand side Read powered home with a brilliant header.

The hosts only piece of hesitancy of the half lead to Combe hitting the post, and from the rebound Prowse cleared off the line brilliant and the ball eventually ended up in the arms of Warner.

Second half with the wind now at their backs, Berrow started sloppily but as with the first half the defence dealt with all that Combe could throw at them.

It was effectively game over when Dave Keirle chased down a loose back pass, giving the keeper little choice but to bring him down as he gained control of the ball and rounded him, Keirle dispatched the resulting penalty kick.

Berrow took the opportunity to bring on Eley at this point for Reddish and he should have added to his goal tally when put clean through, however he elected to try an audacious 50 yard lob rather than take the ball on further.

Keirle added the gloss with the goal of the game when Read played a great ball over the top, Keirle plucked the ball out of the air majestically, ran clean through and tucked the ball past the advancing keeper.

Another satisfying win for Berrow as they move up a place in the table and now nestle nicely amongst the chasing pack, next up for them is a difficult trip to Congrebury another side who are currently in the promotion shake up.

Man of the match was Jack Shepherd, who was pushed closely by Prowse who improves with every game as he continues his rehabilitation from injury.

Warner, Vickery, Dawes, Prowse, Lismore, Reddish (Eley), Read, McErlain, Shepherd, Vincent (Harper), Keirle.
