Weston Super Mare & District League KO Cup Round 1; Winscombe Reserves 5, Berrow Reserves 4.
Forth division Berrow went into this fiery cup clash win Div 2 high flyers Winscombe with just the bare 11, but unfortunately started the first 30mins as if they only had the bare 3 or 4 and left themselves a mountain to climb.
The only change from the previous game saw Dale Curtis come in to the side to replace Barrett who was on international duty.

To say that Berrow started slowly is the biggest compliment at least 7 players could get as too many of the BFC rabbits just stood and stared at the Winscombe headlights as the home team won every 1st, 2nd and 3rd ball and effectively won the tie in the first 3 attacks.

Soon after George Panayi have made a great save from a free kick, the home side carved open the left side of Berrow’s defense and crossed for the striker to volley in. Maybe the goal should not have stood as the player obviously had an invisibility cloak on which is why no one decided to mark him.

Soon after the lead was doubled when Winscombe ran through a non existent off side trap, Panayi made another great save but the ball fell to a blue shirt for a tap in. The away side created some half chances but more desire and confidence was needed in-front of goal.

Berrow were in disarray and only had the old heads of Raymond, Baunton, Puddy and Marshfield to show any effort, but even they could not stop the nail in the coffin.

As the home side broke down the left the ball appeared to go out of play by a fair distance but the slimey Winscombe striker played on as most Berrow players stood with their hands in the air pointing to the clouds and moaning. He duly rounded the 4 statues and powered the ball into the roof of the net. At school you get taught three things- ABC easy as 123, and play to the whistle! A lesson to all.

Now that BFC had managed to lose the game they decided to play some football, try, tackle and talk to each other. They were handed a lifeline when Ash Catlow slid an inch perfect ball through to in form Simon Baunton to shimmy and round the keeper to leave the score 3-1 at half time.

A microphone in the away changing room picked up Raymond’s stirring team talk - “that was ****** **** some of you wont ******* tackle and if that doesn’t change you can ****** **** off and go home. Id rather loose 7-1 and try than play like most of you have. Show some spirit or don’t bother turning up next week”

Berrow were a different team in the second half. Vickery went up front and Baunton dropped to midfield and the changes worked. Within 10 minutes it was game on when Baunton curled in a 25 yard free kick, along the ground and through the keeper’s legs, belief returned.

Belief left 2 mins later.
A low cross into the BFC box was miss kicked and looped high over Panayi into the far corner.

Who’s that knocking on the door?? Its belief!! John Bassi skipped round the flaying legs of defenders and cross for Curtis, he missed his header but the ever alert Vickery collected, span and shot for 4-3, game on.

Game off.
A fast counter attack saw the Winscombe number 9 race through to score his 4th of the game and leave the score 5-3 with 12 mins remaining.
But 3mins later another physiological state came through the door this time it was hope.

After Baunton had used all his experience to reduce Winscombe to ten men via a red card, that man bassi set off again. He beat the same 3 defenders and crossed for Raymond to plant a Shearer style header back past the keeper to set up a frantic 5 mins.

BFC created one last chance as Bassi clipped the ball over the top for Harper, but he couldnt shake the defender off to touch the ball past the keeper.

Although out of the cup, Berrow will take heart from a good second half performance against a very good Winscombe side

M-o-M - John Bassi
