Weston-Super-Mare & District League Division 4; Berrow Reserves 5, Banwell Reserves 1
|
Meaty challenges, bookings, head-butts, kicks and the odd clothes-line made this a great spectacle for the near capacity crowd at red road on Saturday. Berrow went into this game against the basement side full of expectation, until, during the warm up a few familiar faces were spotted yet their names were missing from the team sheet - Ringers! A stronger than normal Banwell side easily won the opening exchanges of the game as Berrow struggled to match the physical and aggressive approach, but struggle didn’t mean give up, and slowly the better football team came through. Andy Walter restored himself to the starting line up and repaid that faith with his best performance to date, with a ‘see ball – win ball’ type display. Half way through the half neither keeper had made a save. Both Vickery and Bassi had gone close before Baunton (aka Torres) loaded his right boot with a scud and opened fire from 27 yards, the ball flew into the Banwell goal to the shock and joy of the BFC players for a 1-0 lead. This was maybe one of the best goals the MILLENUIM pitch has ever seen. After a short wait while the ground staff repaired the net from the rocket, play resumed and heated up. James Vickery was causing havoc and created himself 3 chances to double the lead, only to be thwarted by good goal keeping. John Bassi picked up his second booking of the season for an ill-timed challenge and then managed to miss a golden opportunity when he went clean through and just had to roll it to Harper for a tap in, instead he decided to chip the keeper, chip the goal and chip the 20 foot fence behind to make sure the game was nice and close for half time. The message from manager Walter was to keep matching them with work rate and the rest will take care of itself. Within minutes of the restart a corner was whipped in by Guyatt, flicked on by Puddy and powered in by Vickery to give Berrow some breathing space and start to play some football. Soon Catlow and Raymond in midfield took complete control of the game and constantly fed the wingers- Harper and Bassi and got rewarded on 65 mins. Harper was fouled on the corner of the box resulting in a free kick. Baunton clipped the ball into the box which saw 3 Berrow players line up to head it in, Bassi again tried his best to miss but poor technique meant his header found the bottom left corner to effectively seal the game. Banwell pushed on for the remainder of the game but found the Centre back partnership of Walter and Puddy as solid as the wind bitten, white cliffs of Dover, and with support from the ever improving Marshfield and Dan ‘Hollywood’ Guyatt, young keeper Panayi was left with very little to do. With the game won Walter decided to wrap his 2 superstars in cotton wool and so withdrew Raymond and Baunton. This presented a chance to welcome back Rochford and Dyer after a few seasons recovering from hangovers. With the changes made and Banwell going a little heedlessly forward the game became very open. Panayi finally had something to do when the away side had their first shot on target, he missed it and the score went to 3-1 2 late goals from Vickery - expertly set up with inch perfect passes by Guyatt and Bassi, saw Berrow end up 5-1 winners and keep their promotion challenge firmly on track. MOM - Walter Panayi, Guyatt Walter, Puddy, Marshfield, Bassi, Harper Raymond (Rochford), Catlow, Vickery, Baunton (Dyer)
