Somerset County FA Senior Cup First Round; Berrow 4, Portishead Town Reserves 1
In a rest from the positive league form, Berrow hosted Portishead Reserves at Red Road on Saturday. Portishead, playing in the league above, would be an ideal chance for the team to test themselves. Berrow started the game without David “Chipper” Keirle who has been in Fernando Torres like form in recent weeks. Jeff Read started the game upfront with Jack Shepherd coming into midfield. Dax Vincent was posted on the right hand side of midfield, coming in for Will Conway who will now be flying to Highbridge to participate in football activities.

Berrow started the game in great form, strong midfield play resulted in an interchange between Ryan McErlain, Vincent and Read, with the latter scoring a great early goal sliding in at the far post. Before Portishead could impose their physical approach to the game Berrow were two up. Ryan McErlain receiving a pass from Vincent, scoring a great individual goal, utilising his ability to lose a defender, before coolly slotting pass the onrushing goalkeeper. Portishead started to get physical as the game pushed on and near the end of the half looked more like scoring. Strong defence play between Dean, who slotted in well at centre back, Prowse, Vickery and Lismore prevented any potential creative Portishead play.

During half time manager Louis Dean requested the same level of play from the Berrow team, which he got. Berrow scored a further two goals through a Luke McErlain penalty and a an own goal from a Lismore cross.

Portishead had the chance to pull a goal back late on after they were awarded a penalty. Warner produced an amazing parry to his left which kept Berrow towards a clean sheet, but they did score a late consolation, much to the disappointment of Brian “The Hitman” Hart on the side lines.

It was a very strong performance from Berrow on the day, which showed what level of football they can aspire to if they keep motivation and dedication levels high. Much should be said of the performance of Dax Vincent who showed some real class during the game.

Man of the Match was awarded to Ryan McErlain who produced a grand display of football.

Warner, Vickery (Harper), Dean, Prowse (Dawes), Lismore, Vincent, Reddish, L.McErlain (Eley), R.McErlain, Shepherd, Read
