Somerset County League Division 2 KO Cup; Berrow 3, Long Ashton 4.
|
This is the league cup Berrow won last year and wanted to maintain. Berrow knew they were in for a hard game as they previously beat their opponents by a last gasp effort last month.
Berrow were without defenders Vickery & Dean, as well as centre back Simon Dawes who has now moved to neighbours Burnham United and Berrow wish him all the best in his relegation battle season.
Berrow started well playing some neat interchanges and forced the play early on, with a wet surface zipping the ball around. The wings of Vincent and Harper got straight at their men and Vincent scored an early goal when coming from the right and outpacing his man, he lashed it home with his left peg to make it 1-0.
The midfield of Berrow continued to dominate the half with Captain Ryan McErlain showing why his leadership skills will be paramount in Berrow having a successful campaign. The make shift defence of Shepherd, Reddish, Prowse and Lismore done well to control a physical and lively partnership.
Berrow’s second came when Harper ran through and was brought down in the box for Luke McErlain to slot down the middle with calm 2-0. Berrow just needed to see out the end of the half but a 30yard strike skipped off the surface but keeper Warner will be disappointed to see it go in. H-T 2-1
Shortly after half time Lismore laid a back pass on a plate for the striker to score 2-2.
Berrow knew that the next goal was vital and early exchanges showed Long Ashton was still up for this. Berrow’s sub Read came off the bench and slotted from 12 yards to put the game to bed, so manager Dean thought. 3-2
Berrow dug in but seemed tired and Long Ashton came forward and scored 2 in the last 10 minutes. Berrow had no reply as Long Ashton celebrated what was a deserved win, whereas Berrow crumbled when the question was asked. FT- 3-4.
Manager Dean said “We lost to an ok team nothing special but what does that make us? The next game is vital. If we want to win things then we don’t need 50% of our team out until the all hours still wondering how they got home. A few players came out of this game with their heads held high and I mean a few. Players have let the club down and their team mates so how they react now will determine our season”
Mom- Ryan McErlain, played with hunger and passion and showed great leadership skills
Team: Warner, Shepherd, Reddish, Prowse, Lismore, Harper, Vincent, Eley, L.McErlain, R.McErlain, Keirle: Subs- Catlow, Read, not used Marshfield.
