Weston-Super-Mare & District League Division 4; Berrow Reserves 8, Hutton Reserves 1
3 goals in 5 minutes sealed a fine league double over lowly Hutton on Saturday afternoon to keep Berrow’s promotion train firmly on track.

After impressing in the last game, Dale Curtis got his first league start upfront with the in-form Simon Baunton which saw James Vickery take up his place on the right side of midfield. Adam Cox remained in goal as youngster George Panayi is still recovering from a toe operation.

A slow first 20 minutes opened the game but Berrow started to take control of the game and create some chances, first Baunton was put through by Guyatt but failed to work the keeper, then Vickery went clean through but failed to hit the target at the second attempt.
Just before half time the breakthrough did come. Berrow’s long serving skipper Puddy won a crunch tackle which saw the ball fall to Baunton on the volley. He instinctively new where Curtis would run and played the ball over the top – the rest was like watching the Premiership. Curtis ran through, got the ball out of his feet and absolutely tanked it into the top right from 20 yards. He then ran off and celebrated like Ravanelli (on his own).

Another rousing team talk from the ‘ill’ Andy Walter saw BFC come out and wipe the floor with Hutton straight from the whistle. Within a minute Bassi and Barrett played a one two down the left and Bassi crossed for the steaming-in Curtis to power a header into the top corner. 2 minutes later Guyatt crossed for Baunton to smash in from 7 yards, and 2 minutes after that Raymond put Curtis through, the keeper managed to make a save but Barrett followed in to score the forth. Game Over.

Berrow took a breather for 10 minutes and passed the ball around with relaxed ease as a shell shocked Hutton, egged on but the traveling support, began to kick and moan. Through this spell two young starlets shone forth like lighthouses on a stormy night- Thomas ‘Trigger’ Marshfield and Ash Catlow. Both boys ran around, tackled and passed like seasoned professionals. Not to be out shone though was Baunton upfront as he hit a 47 yard, first time, left footed lob to make it 5. No wonder Torquay United had been making enquires this week.

Berrow did leak a goal mid-way through the half as a Hutton striker ran through; Cox made a good save but the rebound was tucked away.

Berrow hit back straight away when Barrett played in Baunton, the keeper got to the ball first but it fell for Barrett to coolly curl into an open net for 6.
With the game won Walter made 2 changes- seeing the return of Jay Curtis (who had a goal disallowed) and new signing Yasir Affifi.
Just after the changes Bassi forced a corner, which was hit on the left foot by Raymond, only to be cleared off the line and fall to Catlow. He fainted with the right – cut back in with the left and hit a pearl that just left the keeper standing as the ball went in off the post.

With the scores locked at 7-1 Cox made an unbelievable save from a one on one. Seriously – Unbelievable!

Baunton should have been awarded a penalty late on when he was pinned for 3 by the visiting keeper, but when Affifi was upended a spot kick was finally awarded. Barrett was given a chance to score his first hat-trick for Berrow and made no mistake. (But it does help when the keeper doesn’t dive)

Manager Walter commented after the game- ‘’ we have a good squad with lots of confidence and a good mentality- these are facts’’

The result leaves Berrow 4 points off top place with a game in hand.

Team- Cox, Guyatt Marshfield Puddy Bassi, Vickery (J Curtis) Raymond Catlow Barrett, Baunton Curtis (Afffi)

Man-of-the-Match – Ashley Catlow
