Somerset County League Division 2 West; Berrow 5, Weston St Johns 1.
|
Berrow ended their recent poor run of form with a thumping win over promotion rivals Weston St John. Having been dumped unceremoniously out of both cup competitions in the last two weeks, Berrow got back to league action at Red Road.
With Gary Prowse resting Berrow called Wayne Barrett back to the first team fold and he took his place at left back, giving an impressive performance.
The hosts started nervously, on the back of a couple of quite abysmal performances and were deservedly punished, when they failed to clear a seemingly harmless ball into the box leading to Ross Vickery making a rash challenge. The referee was left little choice but to point to the spot, the saints striker duly obliged to give his side the lead.
Berrow, with the words of manager Louis Dean still ringing in their ears from Thursday evening responded excellently, with Luke and Ryan McErlain pulling the strings in midfield.
It was saints that went closest to scoring, with Lloyd Dean brilliantly heading off of the line.
As the half went on, Berrow grew in confidence and it was only a goal line clearance and some desperate defending that denied Berrow a deserved equalizer.
Eventually on the stroke of half time, Berrow were rewarded. A corner from Luke McErlain was only half cleared, falling to Ryan McErlain who coolly slotted home from inside the box.
Second half Berrow were rampant.
They got started ten minutes in, and a three goal blitz all but ended the visitors challenge.
Berrow got ahead when a long lofted clearance from Lloyd Dean caused all kinds of confusion in the saints back line, Jeff Read who was switched to striker for the second half charged down and poked the ball past the stranded keeper.
Berrows third came from Ryan McErlain, who notched his fifth of the season lashing home with his left boot from a well worked set piece.
No sooner had they scored the third goal, the hosts had a fourth! This time Dave Keirle with a trade mark chip after being brilliantly put clean through.
Berrow, with the game won, took the opportunity to bring on Subs Ellis Harper, Jack Shepherd and debutant Alex Taylor, a recent signing from rivals Burnham United.
Keirle wrapped things up with his 17th goal of the season and Taylor had a golden opportunity to put the icing on the cake with a debut goal, however he fired straight at the keeper with the goal at his mercy.
Berrows man of the match was Luke McErlain, pipping his brother in the McErlain show!
Warner, Barrett, Dean, Vickery, Lismore (Shepherd), Reddish (Harper), R.McErlain, L.McErlain, Vincent, Read, Keirle (Taylor)
