Weston-Super-Mare & District League Division 4; Berrow Reserves 6, Clevedon Dons 1
The sold out crowd at Red Road couldn’t believe they didn’t have to pay to see standard of football provided by Berrow’s 2nd XI on Saturday.
The opposition turned up 7 points clear of third placed Berrow having played 2 games more so the Reds new only a win would do to keep their title hopes alive.

Andy Walter was forced into several changes from the side that were dumped out of the divisional cup in their last game. Captain Puddy (inj) Raymond & Catlow (working) and Curtis (ill) dropping to the bench saw the return of Guyatt and Marshfield from holidays and the call up of 1st team players Jack Shepherd, Jeff Read and Ross Vickery.

James Vickery was restored to his usual striking role and Alex Taylor was handed his first league start in the centre of the park since his defection from the scum.

The game was but 3 minutes old when the Dons stole the lead, against the run of play. The referee allowed a free kick to be taken 10 yards further forward than it should have been. These extra 10 yards saw the ball sail to the back post where the winger pounced on a loose ball to poke past a stranded Panayi in goal. Although the away side wasn’t to know, this was the best it was going to be for The Dons all afternoon as Berrow dominated in every department and played their best football of the season so far.

The rezzies then went up through the gears and almost equalized when Read played in ©Baunton, he beat the keeper to the ball but could only prod it inches wide of the post. James Vickery played himself into form and was a constant threat with his unselfish running off the ball causing problems for the away side’s large defence.

Berrow’s best chances came from crosses, as Guyatt and the ‘Crossing Machine’ Shepherd bombarded the box. It was from one of these crosses that BFC pulled level. J Vicks ran the channel and laid the ball back to Guyatt who crossed long to the far stick. Barrett muscled in, and instead of hitting it with his right, he clipped it back over his head, leaving 2 defenders bewildered, and smashed it into the net from 6 yards. The crowd went wild but that cheer was doubled when fan favourite Tommy Clarke bought an immaculate Shepherd cross out of the air with a sublime touch and volleyed in from close range to the shock of everyone watching.

Berrow should have trebled their lead just before half time when Midfield-General Taylor sent a 50 yard pass over the top for Vickery; unfortunately his attempted lob didn’t provide the goal that the pass deserved.

At half time manager Walter told his side not to get carried away as there is only one goal in it. The next goal was vital but it would only come through hard work and simple football.

It took 15 minutes for the next goal, Vickery again ran the channel and laid back to Guyatt, his lofted cross was met at the far post by ©Baunton who nodded in from 2 yards. At this point the away side appeared to give up and Berrow coasted to victory.

The goal of the game came next as Taylor picked up a loose ball and twatted in from 30 yards, the ball struck the underside of the bar, landed 2 yards over the line, bounced back up and hit the bar again and then out to the keepers arms. Unbelievably the referee and linesman both failed to see the ball cross the line so the keeper cleared with a very cheeky grin.

Vickery got his deserved goal when he converted a penalty after ©Baunton was felled in the area, and then doubled his tally when ©Baunton’s clip over the top bounced over the keeper for a tap in. At this stage Walter made 2 changes which saw Curtis replace the hard working Vickery and Grahame Dyer taking the place of The General.

Berrow stroked the passes around with confident ease and any half chances CDFC created were repelled by Marshfield and Vickery at the heart of the formidable defence.

Wayne Barrett made it 9 goals in 10 games from midfield when he flicked up a Jeff Read pass and volleyed into the top corner to finish off a very good afternoon.

After the game 1st team skipper Ryan McErlain was asked what he thought of the game – ‘’I was a great performance today from the lads, its good to see that players in the reserves could step up to the 1st team and do a job if asked. It’s also good to see the hard work and passing ethic instilled into the team by Waltz as it shows the club has a winning mentality through all teams, players and staff. A couple of our lads were able to get a run out today which can only help when we play our title rivals – Banwell next week’’

Manager Walter wishes to thank everyone who was able to come and watch on Saturday, he also gave special thanks to Jeff Read and Ross Vickery who were called in at the last minute and gave it their all for the Reserves.

Berrow Reserves are now second in Division Four, just 4 points behind Clevedon Dons but with 2 games in hand. They have no game next week, returning to action on the 30th of January @ local rivals King Alfred’s
