Somerset County League Division 2 West; Wells City Reserves 2, Berrow 2.
|
Berrow picked up, what may turn out to be a very useful point come the end of the season against a vastly improved and well drilled Wells City side boasting several players with first team caliber.
After having not kicked a ball since their 5-1 victory over Weston St John, the visitors would have forgiven for a slow start. However Berrow started the sharper of the 2 teams and within 30 seconds of kick off attacker Jeff Read burst clean through and forced a good save from the hosts keeper, when maybe he should have scored.
Wells, full of confidence after a very good victory the previous week over Long Ashton began to take a foothold in the game as Berrow’s positive start began to wane with some woeful decision making and equally sloppy football. Had it not been for 2 fine close range saves from Chris Warner Berrow could have been dead and buried by half time.
Wells did take a deserved lead ten minutes before the interval, when Berrow were caught napping from a set piece the home strike finished confidently from close range.
It was not a lead they would hold for long, as within a minute Berrow were level. Dax Vincent applied the finish, when he flung himself at Wayne Barrett’s cross- shot and watched the ball loop into the top corner. It was an equalizer Berrow scarcely deserved.
Second half saw a much better performance from the visitors, but it was Wells that made the breakthrough midway through the half, an unfortunate defensive slip gave the Wells goal scorer the opportunity to double his account, which he duly took from close range.
Once again Berrow hit back almost immediately, slick football from the visitors saw Barrett as provider yet again as he found Dave Keirle at the far post, the reliable front man finished well from a tight angle.
Wells had an opportunity to retake the lead, when another defensive slip saw the Wells striker handed an opportunity on goal, however once again Wells were to be thwarted by Warner who, at full stretch, tipped his attempted chip around the post.
Despite a frenetic end to end final 15 minutes, neither side were able to find a breakthrough and both had to settle for a well fought out point.
Berrows Man of the Match was Warner for an outstanding display.
Next up for Berrow is a home clash against local rivals Burnham United Reserves 14:30 kick off.
Warner, Lismore, Prowse (Shepherd), Vickery, Barrett, Eley (Harper), L.McErlain, Read, R.McErlain, Vincent, Keirle.
