Somerset County League Division 2 West; Berrow 2, Churchill Club 70 2.
|
Berrow staged an amazing late fight back last Saturday to snatch a point that for so long seemed extremely unlikely.
The hosts were forced into one change from the previous week with Jeff Read unable to make kick off due to work commitments and Lloyd Dean was also recalled into the back line.
Berrow’s first half was simply one to forget, with lethargy coursing through the majority of the side, leading them to a two goal deficit at half time, the first coming when Berrow failed to clear sufficiently and the second via a shocking error from Chris Warner.
Half time couldn’t come quick enough for Berrow chief Louis Dean and a stern team talk at the interval along with a change of formation and personnel did the trick as Berrow dominated the second half looking for a way back into the game.
Jeff Read was introduced to play along side Dave Keirle, Wayne Barrett the man sacrificed.
They were largely frustrated by their opponents who seemed content to sit back and hit Berrow on the counter, a tactic which came close to paying off, fortunately the Berrow back line were well on top of their game with Gary Prowse in particular outstanding.
With just a couple of minutes remaining Berrow grabbed what seemed like a mere consolation as a brilliant team move saw Dave Keirle lay off for Ryan McErlain who curled the ball past the Churchill keeper.
With less than a minute remaining, as a last throw of the dice, Berrow sent everyone forward for a Luke McErlain long throw, the visitors only managed to half clear and the ball was lifted back into the box, with Prowse the man on the end of the ball, he hooked it back across goal, finding Lloyd Dean unmarked on the edge of the 6 yard box, to bundle the ball into the back of the net, cuing scenes of jubilation from the Berrow faithful and an impromptu player pile-on top of the goalscorer.
It was no more than Berrow deserved for their second half performance and underlines the fact that the side really do not know when they are beaten, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done however on the basis of the first half performance.
Berrow’s man of the match was Prowse for his defensive master class.
Next up for Berrow, a home clash in the quarter final of the Divisional cup against Division 2 East league leaders Frome Collegians, 2pm KO at Red Road.
Warner, Sh.Lismore, Prowse, Dean, Vickery, Barrett (Read), Sc.Lismore (Eley), L.McErlain, R.McErlain, Vincent (Shepherd), Keirle.
