Weston-Super-Mare & District League Division 4; Clevedon Dons 1, Berrow Reserves 2.
|
Berrow inflicted a league double over table topping Clevedon Dons at Valley Road on Saturday, leaving themselves just one point behind their hosts with 7 games to go. It was a gutsy, committed and professional performance from a side who had not won away since September 09. Ash Catlow was available after missing the previous week’s cup defeat and even Phil Bute turned up which enabled manager Walter to name a very strong side. The Ressies took the game to The Dons straight from kick off and camped in the hosts half for the first 20 mins without really creating anything. Ben Sinclair had a 20 yarder turned around the post and Marshfield failed to hit the target from a corner. The Dons played counter attack football and could easily be compared to Premiership side Stoke, as every corner, free kick and throw was well prepared and hard to defend. Rich Lambert and keeper Panayi had to be on there toes to stop the fast strikers but the best chance of the half fell to midfield Trojan Raymond who forced the home keeper into an amazing reaction save from 2 yards. The half ended goalless and the team talk was to ’keep doing what your doing as you will break them’. Berrow started the second half as they finished the first and soon the goal they deserved came. Andy Walter picked up the ball at centre half and hit a superb 40 yard pass. Raymond intelligently sucked in the defender and then left the ball which skidded through to Baunton just inside the box. The number 9 hit it first time with his left foot but the keeper managed to tip his shot onto the post, as the ball ran along the goal line Baunton followed in himself for a tap in. This naturally this spurred on the home side, and they equalised within 5 minutes. Skinner skinned Bute and hit a hopeful ball into the box. The ball skidded through but Marshfield had already made up his mind to challenge and couldn’t stop colliding with the Dons player to concede a penalty. Panayi got close but couldn’t stop it hitting the net for 1-1. Walter looked for a response from his players and was not let down. After a corner was half cleared, Bassi played the ball back out wide to Baunton. Sinclair rose like a salmon to head in the pin point cross and put his team-mates ahead with 20 mins left. Corner after corner and throw after throw bombarded the Berrow box for the last ten minutes but the defence stood tall and unbreakable. The one clear chance for an equaliser came late on but the experienced Lambert was well placed on the line to clear to safety while under pressure. Berrow began to run the clock down as James Vickery selflessly ran the ball down the wing, time and time again to relieve pressure for his team-mates, and the one chance he got for his deserved goal he was scythed down. The resulting free kick went to the corner flag where Vickery held the ball until the final whistle came. Man-of-the-Match Ash Catlow said after the game - ‘’we have 7 games to go, 3 against our promotion rivals and 4 against relegation candidates. There are no such things as easy games, regardless of what it says on paper.’’ Old-head Raymond added ‘’we have a cup final every time we step on the pitch from now until the end of the season. If we play like we did today no one will be able to stop us. It’s in our hands now.’’ Team- Panayi, Bute Walter Lambert Marshfield, Sinclair Raymond Catlow Bassi, Baunton Vickery. Subs – (all unused) Dyer, Burke, Curtis |
