Somerset County League Division 2 West; Berrow 4, Long Ashton 2.
Berrow took another step toward promotion Saturday, with an all be it, off key performance against strugglers Long Ashton. Chief Louis Dean warned the hosts of a probable back lash after their Bristol based visitors were thrown out of the cup due to a registration irregularity after they had defeated them 4-3.

He was not disappointed, however Long Ashton went one better this time by fielding a suspended player.

Berrow were missing no fewer than 4 first team regulars who were all away, meaning Alex Taylor was handed a start. The bench was made up of reserve full back Dan Guyatt, Russell Catlow and Manager Dean, who signed player forms earlier in the week to make up the numbers.

Berrow started the game well, and were soon into a deserved, a great flowing team move seeing top scorer Dave Keirle sweep home his 30th of the season from full back Ross Vickery’s cross.

This should have been a building block for the hosts however they began to sit back and rest on the single goal, although the Long Ashton keeper was tested well on a couple of occasions, Berrow failed to gain a foot hold.

They were duly punished. On the stroke of half time they leveled from a well taken corner.

Half time was not comfortable for either side as Dean rallied his troops in the Berrow changing room and the referee dealt with Long Ashton’s manager over their blatant rule infringement – the player in question was promptly substituted.

Berrow managed to up their game in the second period, and were soon 2-up when Keirle turned home Luke McErlains centre, amusingly giving himself cramp in the process.

It wasn’t long until it was 3 – however hard Berrow conspired to not score, with the ball eventually being fired home by Jeff Read. McErlain, Keirle and Read in the first instance all had an opportunity to beat the keeper from close range before the latter eventually on his second attempt.

The fourth was another excellent team move, Read turning provider for Dax Vincent to cap a great individual display with a close range finish.

Long Ashton grabbed a late consolation from a defensive slip.

The only other incident worthy of note was Dean introducing himself for the final few minutes, the first time he has kicked a competitive football since September 2008.

Berrow manager Dean said after the game “It was far from a vintage display, but I’m more than happy with the 3 points” “Its a good warm up for next weeks cup semi final against another Bristol based side, Imperial, who Im sure will play in a very similar style”

Commenting on the apparent Long Ashton rule break he said “Its madness, We knew they had a player suspended from the league website, they also have a website with players pictures on it, which after the last incident we studied before the game.” “It hardly took Sherlock Holmes to work out when they were calling a player named Jamie on the team sheet Craig that something was amiss!” “Maximum credit must go to referee, David Healey, for the way he handled the situation and the game in general”

Man of the match was Dax Vincent – Energetic, Skillful, Hard working and even won some headers!

Warner, Vickery (Guyatt), Lloyd Dean, Prowse, Barrett, Vincent, L.McErlain, R.McErlain, Taylor, Read, Keirle (Louis Dean) unused; Catlow
