Weston-Super-Mare & District League Division 4; Berrow Reserves 1, Blagdon 0.
|
Berrow Reserves battled with old rivals Blagdon on Saturday afternoon and, with thanks to local side King Alfred SC, ended the day 2 points clear at the top of division 4. Although missing Ash Catlow and John Bassi from last weeks fine victory due to work commitments, manager Andy Walter named another strong side by bringing in Steve Eley and Jamie Reddish as straight swaps. The pitch restricted both sides from playing any football, but in recent weeks Berrow have been made of steel and easily won the physical battle to send the visitors home moaning. The early exchanges saw lots of long range efforts fired in on goal. Berrow keeper Panayi was in inspired form and showed an immaculate display of good handling and fine goalkeeping. The centre back partnership of Walter and Lambert dominated from start to finish and stamped out any sparks that Blagdon had as an attacking threat. Phil Bute returned to form with a very impressive display at right back, always 3 yards ahead of the game. With free kick being given every few minutes it wasn’t long before a big decision had to be made. Striker Baunton threw a long throw into the box and Sinclair was pushed in the back as he tried to flick the ball on. Unfortunately the resulting penalty was missed by Vickery who had scored 7 pens this season. With the scores locked 0-0 at half time, Berrow knew that the best way to get the points was with a scrappy one-nil. However they shouldn’t have underestimated themselves as they blew Blagdon away in the second half and were unlucky not to have won by more. Andy Walter hit another 40 yard ball through to a striker, this week to Vickery, who rounded the keeper and scored in the empty net to make up for his penalty miss. Baunton had 2 efforts cleared off the line and missed the target when Vickery squared for a tap in. And Eley hit a wonder strike that looked destined for the top corner, only to come back off the inside of the post. With the game turning into a war, midfield hard man Raymond was booked late on for persistently clearing up every Blagdon player. Man-of-the-Match Walter replaced himself with the returning Guyatt late on, and also introduced Dyer and Curtis to help see the game out. There was only one bit of late drama when the Blagdon keeper came up for a corner in the last minute which resulted in a goal mouth scramble until Panayi saved and then pushed the ball away to safety. With the final whistle came cheers from the players and their 1st team mates who watched the last ten minutes after their fine semi-final victory over Imperial. The reserves have 3 tricky games in April against teams fighting for survival, starting with a visit to East Worle Res on Saturday. Team- Panayi, Marshfield Walter (Guyatt) Lambert Bute, Reddish (Dyer) Eley Raymond Sinclair, Vickery (Curtis) Baunton
