Somerset County League Division 2 West; Berrow 2, Westland United 1
Berrow took another huge stride toward promotion to division 1 Saturday with a classic smash and grab victory over fourth placed Westland United, despite being second best throughout the majority of the match.

It was testament to the pitch and the hard work of chairman/groundsman Brian Hart with a handful of players on Saturday morning that the game went ahead at all with the majority of the counties fixtures falling victim to the wet weather.

Berrow made one change from the previous week with Alex Taylor unable to shake off illness, Scott Lismore was restored to the starting line up. Simon Baunton was called up as a last moment replacement to the bench.

Berrow got off to a fine start, forcing the Westlands keeper into some early action with Luke McErlain fizzing in some testing balls into the visitors box.

The hosts took a deserved lead when the Westlands keeper failed to deal properly with Dax Vincents effort, Dave Keirle following up to finish at the second time of asking.

Berrow doubled their lead within minutes, Vincent again the provider, when his fierce strike was charged down, Gary Prowse was once again in the right place at the right time for the seventh time this season.

From this point Berrow failed to perform in the manner that they have in previous weeks.

Westlands were allowed back into the game when Berrow were caught napping from a set piece and were duly punished.

Berrow continued to half time conceding countless unnecessary free kicks and giving away possession far too cheaply, putting the Berrow back line under concerted pressure for large periods, pressure that they dealt with admirably.

Manager Louis Dean called for a better showing for the second period, it was a call that fell on deaf ears on this occasion as the league leaders failed to get out of the blocks.

Instead it was the Berrow defence that were called upon to provide the grit and determination to grind out the result as Westlands set about an onslaught on the Berrow goal.

They were to only be denied by the wood work, a fine goal line clearance and some fine goal keeping from Chris Warner.

Prowse and Lloyd Dean were also imperious, with Prowse winning absolutely everything in the air and Dean winning the battle on the ground.

In the final minute Westlands thought they had the equaliser that their endeavour deserved, only for it to be ruled out, correctly, for handball.

Berrow can count themselves fortunate to take 3 points from this game, as they rode their luck in the second half.

Chief Dean said after the game "We've bemoaned our luck at certain points of the season, but today lady luck was certainly smiling on us" "I think we've had a seasons worth of good fortune in one game, they've hit the bar, hit the post, Gary (Prowse) has cleared one off the line and Warner has made a couple of great saves" "My only disappointment is that at times our discipline was poor, we gave away alot of needless free kicks and were guilty of not playing the easy ball, surrendering possession far too easily"

Berrows man of the match was once again defensive lynchpin Prowse just edging it from
Warner, both dealt with all that was thrown at them.

Warner, Barrett (Shaun Lismore), Prowse, Dean, Vickery (Baunton), Scott Lismore, R. McErlain, L. McErlain, Vincent, Read, Keirle.

Next up for Berrow is their final home fixture against Wrington & Redhill 3pm kick off.
