Somerset County League Division 2 West; Weston St Johns 1, Berrow 2.
Berrow all but guaranteed their place in Division 1 of the Errea Somerset County League next season with a well earned victory over second placed Weston St Johns.

Berrow recalled Lloyd Dean and Jeff Read to the starting line up as Wayne Barrett dropped to the bench. Manager Louis Dean elected for a slight change in formation deciding to start with a 4-3-3 line up signaling his intent that Berrow were not there to settle for a draw.

Berrow got off to a promising start on a difficult surface, trying the best they could to play football on a hard, bumpy surface and put the hosts back line under some good early pressure forcing errors and winning several corners.

This wasn’t to last long as St Johns started to gain a foothold, settling into their own rhythm with a succession of long balls putting Berrow under pressure.

They took a deserved lead when their lively striker converted a free kick from the edge of the box.

They could have easily had a mountain to climb when the same man broke into the box, only for a miraculous last ditch challenge from skipper Ryan McErlain, showing his nous when his team mates needed it.

They were dealt a further blow when their outstanding defender Gary Prowse had to come off due to struggling with illness, he was replaced by Wayne Barrett and Ross Vickery shuffled across to partner Dean at centre back.

Berrow could have been forgiven for allowing their heads to drop at suffering two major blows, but in fact it only served to be the spark they required to haul themselves back into the game as once again they dominated.

The equalizer itself however came from an unlikely route, as Luke McErlain expertly found the back of the net directly from a corner.

Clearly rattled, St Johns started to lose their discipline, making errors and committing unnecessary fouls all over the pitch and with half time approaching the visitors took the lead, Scott Lismore slaloming through traffic in the 18 yard box to lay off to Dave Keirle who applied a cool finish.

Second half saw a call for more of the same, and unlike the previous Saturday Louis Dean was not disappointed as Berrow picked up where they left off, with Luke McErlain in particular his opponents tormentor.

Also coming into his own was Dax Vincent who ran his heart out, showing the improvement he has made in the last few weeks combining his undoubted talent with effort and work rate, he can count himself unfortunate not to have got on the score sheet seeing his effort hit the outside of the post late on.

St Johns, did all they could to get back into the game, but the Berrow rear guard were once again excellent giving Chris Warner very little to do except sweep up anything that found its way into his box.

In the end St Johns ran out of time as the referee called an end to the match to the delight of the Berrow players and supporters who made the short journey to Weston.

Skipper Ryan McErlain commented after “The lads were awesome tonight, each and every one of them, and got virtually everything right we must remain this focused and disciplined to the end”
“We are within touching distance of promotion now and after the disappointment of last season we are hungry to keep this run up and win the title which we can seal with 6 more points”
“I’d also like to thank the lads that weren’t involved tonight for their support, the reserve team players and every one else for their support, outnumbering the home fans!”

Berrows man of the match was Dax Vincent – beginning to discover his full potential.

Warner, Vickery, Prowse (Barrett), Dean, Shaun Lismore, Scott Lismore, R. McErlain (Taylor), L.McErlain, Read (Eley), Keirle, Vincent.
