Somerset County League Division 2 West; Wrington & Redhill 0, Berrow 2.
|
Berrow cruised to promotion Saturday in the heat against Wrington & Redhill last Saturday and moved to within a single point of winning the championship with 3 games remaining.
Berrow were without the influential Jeff Read who was unavailable due to work commitments, so James Reddish was recalled to the starting line up.
The score suggests a tight game, in truth Berrow were totally in control from start to finish, finding the net 4 times, 2 perfectly good strikes being ruled out by the most over zealous linesman in the county.
Berrow thought they had taken the lead early on when Dave Keirle expertly lost his man from Luke McErlains cross to fire home, however he was duly robbed of a perfectly good goal by the man on the Wrington line much to the dismay of the Berrow team.
The visitors did edge ahead, deservedly a few minutes later Scott Lismore flicking on McErlains free kick to into the opposite corner.
If Berrow were dismayed by the first offside decision, they were outraged by the second as Reddish latched on to Ryan McErlains pass beat his man and lashed the ball past the keeper from 30 yards on his weaker left foot, only for the linesman to outrageously put his flag up, the referee concurring and awarding a free kick to Wrington.
Second half followed a similar pattern as the first with Berrow dictating, but being largely frustrated by the village idiot on the Wrington line who continued to make baffling, embarrassing decisions.
Berrow were finally rewarded for their enterprise when slick football saw Keirle clear in the box, he squared the ball for Vincent only for the Wrington defender to beat him to it and divert the ball past the stranded keeper. If Vincent had of got to the cross first, no doubt the linesman would have deemed him offside.
Berrow saw the rest of the game out with very little incident, to pick the points to guarantee they will be playing in division 1 next year.
Man of the Match – Ryan McErlain once again just edging his brother Luke out.
Warner, Shaun Lismore, Vickery, Dean, Barrett (Eley), Scott Lismore, R.McErlain, L.McErlain, Reddish (Shepherd), Vincent (Taylor), Keirle.
