Somerset County League Division 2 West; Westland United 2, Berrow 3.
This could have been a pivotal game, with Berrow’s controversial defeat on the Tuesday to Banwell leaving them needing a point in their final 2 games to seal the championship.

However with Weston St John being held to a draw by Congresbury on Wednesday, Berrow went into this game with the pressure off, having already been confirmed as champions.

Louis Dean took the opportunity to shuffle the pack, allowing Jeff Read, Steve Eley and Ross Vickery to bolster the Reserve ranks for their pivotal game v Blagdon. He also named himself on the bench.

This meant that starts were handed to Ellis Harper, Jack Shepherd and Alex Taylor, with Luke McErlain filling in at Centre back with Wayne Barrett.

Westlands started the game at furious pace, with their own promotion hopes hinging on nothing less than victory and had the inexperience defence of Harper, Barrett, McErlain and Shaun Lismore at full stretch for much of the opening exchanges, only Westlands finishing and bad luck saw the scores remain at 0 for the opening 25 minutes of the half.

Then from nowhere Berrow took an unlikely lead James Reddish brilliantly springing the offside trap, coolly rounding the keeper and slotting home.

Shell shocked, Westlands were at sixes and sevens and were once again punished for poor defending from a McErlain corner saw the ball land at Taylors feet, he applied the finish via a deflection for 2-0.

To their credit Westlands got back on their feet and had the game back in the balance with a screamer of a finish from the edge of the 18 yard box a few minutes before the interval.

Berrow made a change at half time with Scott Lismore being replaced by Dax Vincent.

Westlands once again came out all guns blazing, but once again and in almost uncanny fashion to the first game lady luck completely deserted them with a series of good chances going begging.

They did eventually get the game back on level terms with 10 minutes left to play when Berrow failed to deal with the home keepers huge punt upfield, the ball eventually ending up in the back of the net with the identity of who applied the final touch still a mystery.

However with time running out Berrow all but ended Westlands promotion charge when Luke McErlains free kick was nodded home at the far post by Vincent.

Westland rallied again but were denied by a series of saves by Chris Warner, as time eventually ran out for them.

Louis Dean made his second appearance of the season from the bench and proved despite the advancing years and frail body, he still has something to offer at this level, even showing an impressive turn of pace!

Berrows man of the Match – Ellis Harper who was absolutely superb in an unfamiliar left back role.

Warner, Harper, Barrett, L.McErlain, Shaun Lismore, Scott Lismore (Vincent), R.McErlain, Shepherd, Reddish, Taylor, Keirle (Dean)

Berrow complete their league programme tonight at Yatton Athletic with their final game of the Season the defence of the Division 2 cup v Purnell Sports at Street F.C. 7:30pm Kick off.
